Guild for Early Music Festival, Sunday, October 5, 2013 from 3:30-4:00

Zorzal Music Ensemble will perform as part of the Guild for Early Music (GEMS) Festival at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. The theme for this year's program is: Journeys. Zorzal's presentation will include songs from Renaissance Spain, traditional Sephardic songs, and music from colonial-era Latin America. Songs of Love and War, Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.

Songs of Love and War: Music from the three cultures of Spain and from the nueva cancion movement in Latin America. Prince of Peace Lutheran Church located at 177 Princeton-Hightstown Road in Princeton Junction, New Jersey. Admission is free; free-will offerings will be accepted.

 

¡Villancico!

      Zorzal Music Ensemble will present Latin American and Spanish Christmas music on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 7:00 pm at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church located at 177 Princeton-Hightstown Road in Princeton Junction, New Jersey. Admission is free; free-will offerings will be accepted.

     The concert traces the development of the villancico from its early 16th century Spanish origins, when it was defined as a simple strophic vocal song, through its  explosion into complex multi-voice religious works with instrumental accompaniment during the Baroque period, and up to its current incarnation as Christmas carols from Spanish-speaking regions.

     According to Artistic Director Lynn Gumert, “the concert will feature colonial period “ethnic villancicos,” which celebrate cross-cultural influences. The influences go both ways—Spanish composers drew on African and Native American rhythms, while indigenous composers incorporated European four-part harmony.” Zorzal will perform several jubilant negritos—Spanish-style songs in African dialect that use African rhythms—that celebrate Christ’s birth through the vibrant rhythms of New World dances, as well as other pieces that draw on Native American, Roma, Galician, and Italian musical elements.

     Half of the program will be repeated on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at 4:00 at Christ Church New Brunswick is at 5 Paterson St., New Brunswick, NJ; the other half of the program will consist of the American Boys Choir Training Choir. Cross-Cultural Journeys: Latin American music from the Colonial Period and the Dictatorships, Sephardic Music and contemporary American music.

The new, New Jersey-based Zorzal presented our debut concert at 7:00, Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 177 Princeton-Hightstown Road, Princeton Junction, NJ. The performance included the world premiere of Desert Song, which was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Eighth Alienor International Harpsichord Competition.

 

Migrations: Resistance and Endurance.

A musical and choreographic exploration of cultural migration featuring music and dance from the Golden Age of Spain, from indigenous peoples of the New World, from the Sephardic diaspora, and from Zorzal's Musical Director, Lynn Gumert. Featuring the Grant Street Dance Company. Choreography by Lynn Brooks, Director of Dance at Franklin & Marshall.
